Reading FC boss braced for more January departures

Reading boss Noel Hunt has admitted that he is braced for player exits in January.

Reading boss Noel Hunt has admitted that he is braced for player exits in January.

The former Championship winner was confirmed to take over from Ruben Selles on Friday, signing a two-and-a-half year deal after his five-game interim spell after Paul Ince in 2022.

Drawing 1-1 with Wycombe Wanderers in his first match in charge, thoughts instantly turned to the January transfer window as fears of a repeat of last year were at the forefront of minds.

In January 2024, the likes of Nelson Abbey, Tom McIntyre and Tom Holmes all departed without consent of the new Hull City boss Selles- with supporters protesting shortly after by invading the pitch and seeing a match against Port Vale abandoned.

“It is a pleasure to work with these guys, but we’ve always worked this way. We’ve always been the underdog- more so now than ever. The character in the group, they’re the ones we want. As many as we can keep as possible, that’s the key.”

One such fear of supporters is that Selles, now at the MKM Stadium, will look to take some of his former stars to the Championship and up to East Yorkshire.

However, the Reading Chronicle understands that a clause was inserted when Selles departed which does not allow the Spaniard to take any of the current Reading players in the upcoming winter window.

Reading have four League One fixtures before the window opens, as well as an EFL Trophy match.
