Mamma Mia 3 keeps getting more and more hopeful updates, and if it truly happens, I really need it to bring back one character who got too little screen time in the second movie. Successful musicals usually get the movie treatment at some point, though not all of them succeed on the big screen as they did on stage. Among the ones that have found great success on the stage and in film is Mamma Mia!, which got a film adaptation in 2008 directed by Phyllida Lloyd. Mamma Mia! was a box office success, granting it a sequel 10 years later.

Mamma Mia! followed the preparations for Sophie’s (Amanda Seyfried) wedding and the arrival of three of her mother Donna’s (Meryl Streep) former flames, as any of them could be Sophie’s biological father. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again caught up with Sophie sometime later after Donna’s death, while also exploring how Donna met Sophie’s potential fathers. A third Mamma Mia movie has been in development for a while, and if it finally happens, I need it to bring back one character from the second movie.

Ruby (Cher) arrives in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Mamma Mia 2 introduced Ruby Sheridan (Cher), Donna’s estranged mother who was a famous singer.

Mamma Mia 3 has been in development since 2020, but it has come across a couple of obstacles since then, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the release of ABBA’s 2021 album. The latest update on the future of Mamma Mia 3 comes from Christine Baranski, who is giving fans some hope. Speaking to THR (via Collider), Baranski said she met with producer Judy Kramer and she’s planning Mamma Mia 3. Kramer told Baranski the narrative for the third movie, and the latter is hopeful it will happen with the whole cast.

I can’t deny my disappointment at knowing Cher was in it only for her to appear in the very last minutes of the movie.

Mamma Mia 2 ended with Sophie giving birth to her son and Donna fully passing on after watching over the christening of her grandson. Without Donna around in the present timeline and the past one exploring her younger years, Mamma Mia 2 introduced Ruby Sheridan (Cher), Donna’s estranged mother who was a famous singer. As much as I like Mamma Mia 2, I can’t deny my disappointment at knowing Cher was in it only for her to appear in the very last minutes of the movie and have only one musical number.

Given the complex past between Ruby, Donna, and Sophie, Mamma Mia 2 gave very quick closure to it by having Ruby wanting to build a relationship with Sophie and reuniting with her old flame, who happened to be the new hotel manager. Mamma Mia 3 is the perfect chance to bring Ruby back and make her part of the story, more so now that Donna is gone, and it can answer the many questions there are about her, her past, and her relationship with Donna.

Ruby’s Story Can Make Donna’s Return Possible

My biggest question about Donna’s past is what happened between her and Ruby that their relationship was so bad.

There are different narrative paths Mamma Mia 3 can follow, and some of them can make Donna’s return possible. My biggest question about Donna’s past is what happened between her and Ruby that their relationship was so bad, so the third Mamma Mia movie could be a prequel exploring that part of their lives. Another option is Mamma Mia 3 going back to what happened between the first two movies, bringing Meryl Streep back, and Ruby could be part of it by revealing that they had a final meeting or conversation at some point.

As much as I would like to see Meryl Streep back as Donna, or a young version of the character again, I think Ruby has the potential to take her spot in Mamma Mia 3, especially as there’s a lot to cover in her story. Mamma Mia 3’s future looks hopeful, but it’s to be seen if it will really happen soon and if Ruby will be included, whether Cher’s version or a younger one.
