Reading Forward Hails Royals Boss
Reading forward Chem Campbell joined the League One outfit on transfer deadline day and the Royals’ new signing has already spoken highly of Ruben Selles’ managerial qualities.
Campbell arrived at the Berkshire outfit on loan from Premier League side Wolves on a short-term deal. The 21-year-old will remain at the Madejski Stadium until January 5 before returning to his parent club.
The Welsh player will be looking to make an impact with Reading, having already gained plenty of League One experience. Campbell had previous loan spells with Wycombe Wanderers and Charlton Athletic, making 37 appearances and scoring five goals, per Transfermarkt.
Coincidentally, the Royals took on the Addicks last weekend and won 2-0 at home. However, new signing Campbell was unable to feature but may make his debut on Saturday against Leyton Orient.
During the international break, the forward spoke to the official Reading website and was full of praise for his new boss Selles. In particular, the Welshman highlighted the Spanish coach’s ability to improve his players.
“It was massive- he’s a coach who loves the small details and that can only help a player. If he tells you small points to work on, it can only make you better.
“It was definitely helpful. He showed me that before I signed and now I’ve been here it has been even more intricate and it’s looking good.”
Campbell’s enthusiasm for developing under Selles follows the Reading boss’ public backing of his new signing. Shortly after the 21-year-old joined the Royals, Selles told the Reading Chronicle that the forward has plenty to offer his side.
“Chem was there almost the entire time- our first option- and is a player who is very good in one-versus-one situations, very dynamic and can give us some freshness. He offers a different profile to those we already have and has experience in League One with his loans to Wycombe and Charlton.
“He’s still at a young age so has a lot of development and is a good character that is going to enter into the team really quickly. We need help and he can be very important to us.”

There’s a lot of positivity around Reading about what Campbell can bring during the first half of the League One season. Under Selles, the Wolves man will likely get playing time, with the coach not afraid to use younger players. This season, 21-year-old Michael Craig has played every minute in League One and 19-year-old Tyler Bindon has played in all four fixtures, per Whoscored.
Selles and Campbell already seem to have mutual respect and understanding. Ultimately, this should benefit the team and it will be intriguing to see how the 21-year-old makes his mark at the Madejski Stadium.
