San Antonio Spurs 2023 Draft Review: Grades, Strategies, and Future Outlook

So the picks are in! Overall, I will say the Spurs did a great job even though I believe they should have addressed the front court with the 14th pick. Even so, you have to feel good about Dylan Harper at 2 and Bryant at 14. They are both solid players with great upside. They both project to be fantastic players in the Spurs system. Consequently, I give the Spurs a ceiling grade of A- and a floor grade of B+. I was big on Ace Bailey and still believe he will be a fantastic NBA player, but he simply wasn’t the Spurs guy once they landed on the 2nd pick…that was always Dylan Harper. Who can blame them. Harper has the pedigree, the composure, the skillset at PG, and size. He can certainly work on his pull up jumper and shooting from deep…and yes he’s redundant on a team with Fox and Castle, but overall, that’s a solid A pick.
Bryant is also a very good player with size and defensive prowess. He also has good shooting stats, but on limited shots taken. He only averaged about 6 points a game…though he shot a solid stat line from 3. He is a defense guy and projects to be a 3 and D type guy. Hopefully, we get a little more than 3 & D though. I give this pick a grade B because we really needed to address the front court and there were solid players on the board that could have been just as impactful if not more. (…and yes, that’s my opinion and I don’t necessarily agree he was the BPA).
As stated, overall, I give the team an A-/B+ ….and because I’m a Spurs fan…I’ll grade on the curve and give an A-. 🤣🤣🤣
I’m excited about the upcoming season. I pray Wemby comes back completely healthy. I’m not sure if Barnes, Vassell, KJ, or Mamu will be back…I like those guys, but this is a business. I also hope we address the front court.
What are your thoughts? Who should we trade or let go? Should we go after Bam Abeyo, Myles Turner or Naz Reiz? Should we trade back into the 2nd round and draft Maxime Raynaud? #GoSpursGo
