Wrexham Signs Sheffield Wednesday Captain Barry Bannan who’s out of contract and have agree on a 3-years deal with Wrexham..
Fantastic’ – EFL side urged to sign Sheffield Wednesday man by former player
Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan would be a good signing for Wrexham, former EFL player Kevin Gallacher has said.
Sheffield Wednesday’s captain is out of contract at the end of the month. SWFC are preparing for another year in the Championship.
Bannan, 35, is facing an uncertain future at Hillsborough right now. The Sun claim he is wanted by Wrexham along with Stuart Armstrong.
Ex-Owls man Gallacher has said, as per the Sunday Post (via The Star): “I have seen both men in action in the Championship and have no doubt they could do a job for Wrexham, Bannan especially as he is not only a footballer with fantastic technical ability but also an extremely hard worker. As we have seen for Scotland, Celtic and Dundee United on numerous occasions, Armstrong is an attacking player with a lot of quality. Again, he has a lot of experience in the game and would look an excellent signing for Wrexham to make.
“We see so many players tipped to join Wrexham that we tend to wait until the deals get sealed before thinking too much about them. In this case, though, I will make an exception as it would be nice to see the Wales-Scotland-Celtic connection strengthened there.”
Sheffield Wednesday latest regarding Barry Bannan
Sheffield Wednesday will be desperate to keep hold of Bannan. He has been a great servant to SWFC over recent years.
The Scotsman, who has made 27 caps for his country, joined the Owls back in 2015. He has since made 447 appearances in all competitions for the South Yorkshire outfit and has scored 35 goals.
Bannan played for Celtic from 2002 to 2004 before dropping down the border as a youngster. He was snapped up by Aston Villa and went on to play 83 times for their first-team.
He was also loaned out away from Villa Park at Derby County, Blackpool and Leeds United. Crystal Palace then came calling on a permanent deal before he later linked up with Sheffield Wednesday.
What now for Barry Bannan at Sheffield Wednesday?
Time will tell whether Sheffield Wednesday will still have Bannan come next term. SWFC have some off-field issues going on at the moment.
If he did leave the Owls, he would be a shrewd addition for Wrexham, as Gallacher alluded to. The Red Dragons are gearing up for life in the second tier after their promotion from League One and have ambitious plans to reach the Premier League.
Phil Parkinson’s side are being patient with their recruitment right now. They aren’t rushing into any deals and are waiting for the right characters.
