Chris Waddle drops fresh Sheffield Wednesday takeover claim as pressure mounts on Dejphon Chansiri
A US-based consortium have seen two takeover approaches knocked back by Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri.
Chris Waddle fears his former club Sheffield Wednesday could get relegated next term unless new owners come in as soon as possible.
A Florida-based consortium, headed up by John Flanagan, have had two bids to buy the Owls rejected by owner Dejphon Chansiri in recent months. Adam Shaw, a Sheffield-raised, US-based individual, is also part of the group. In an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield, Flanagan said the consortium consists of “businessmen, former and current professional athletes and individuals that may own sports franchises at the current moment”.
Wednesday are a club in crisis, with the English Football League having charged the Championship club with multiple breaches of its regulations relating to payment obligations. As well as charges brought against the club, Thai businessman Chansiri has also been charged with “causing the club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund their cash requirements”. Players and staff at the club remain without the full payment of their May wages. It is the second time in three months that Chansiri has failed to pay the players and staff on time and in full.
Wednesday released a statement saying they are aiming to pay staff and players their May wages at “the earliest possible opportunity”, adding that Chansiri “sincerely apologised” to those affected. Clive Betts, Labour MP for Sheffield South East, has branded Chansiri’s behaviour “appalling” and called for him to sell the club.
In an exclusive interview with online-casinos.com, Waddle said: “I think Chansiri has had his time and it’s time for him to sell up and get out. Someone else needs to have their turn and take the club forward. I have a lot of affection for Wednesday and it’s a crying shame that people aren’t getting their wages and to see them struggling. You imagine Danny Rohl isn’t coming back.
“They’re in a mess. The sooner this gets solved, the better. They need the new owners to come in and get on top of the situation. They need to pay the debts, pay the players, make new signings and kick on.
