LATEST NEWS: The Wire’s current injured list and potential return dates for the affected players
WARRINGTON Wolves appear to have spent most of the season gripped by an unprecedented injury crisis.
And while some of their stricken stars have since returned to action, plenty more remain on the treatment table with several of them having seen their seasons brought to an early end.
Here, we assess The Wire’s current injured list and look at potential return dates for the affected players…
Short-term
Warrington picked up three more injury concerns before and during Saturday’s victory at Hull FC but – for now at least – all appear minor.
Toby King and Joe Philbin were left out of the side to face the Black and Whites, with head coach Sam Burgess affirming that both had picked up unspecified niggles early in the week that were not risked.
He did, however, say he expected both to be available for selection to face Salford Red Devils on Friday.
A fuller update is being awaited on Rodrick Tai, who was brought off during the final quarter of the 24-10 victory although Burgess insisted his withdrawal was a precautionary measure.
Medium-term
Of the players who have been out for lengthy periods of time, Danny Walker appears to be the closest to returning.
The hooker has not featured since the Round Nine victory over St Helens having undergone knee surgery but is stepping up his recovery having resumed running for the first time last week.
At last update, Burgess said he will not return before the Round 20 split which gives Wire a bye week, with the trip to Leigh Leopards on August 1 pencilled in as a loose target for his return.
Scrum-half Leon Hayes appears to be in a similar boat having not featured all season – having torn his hamstring during pre-season, the youngster then re-injured the ankle he broke upon his last appearance against Salford last April.
The club have been keen to allow Hayes to recover at his own pace and he too has recently resumed running on the grass.
Adam Holroyd became the latest addition to the medium-term injury list when he injured his hamstring in training ahead of the Round 15 loss to Huddersfield Giants.
Burgess has since ruled him out of action for six to eight weeks, meaning the earliest he could return is for Wigan Warriors’ visit to The Halliwell Jones Stadium in Round 21 on August 8.
Long term
Along with Hayes, Cai Taylor-Wray was pictured running on grass for the first time since his own devastating injury blow last week.
The livewire full-back tore his hamstring while playing for the reserves in April and at the time, Burgess said he expected the 19-year-old to miss the remainder of the year.
As of now, that prognosis remains unchanged but his return to light training may have prompted a rethink.
However, there are three players for whom the 2025 season is definitely over after suffering devastating ACL injuries.
Outside-back Arron Lindop was the latest to go down in the defeat at Leeds Rhinos in Round 14 after half-back Oli Leyland had suffered the same injury against Hull KR in Round 12, with winger Matty Ashton having damaged both his ACL and MCL during the Challenge Cup semi-final against Leigh Leopards.
Ashton and Leyland are said to be targeting a return for the start of the 2026 season, but Lindop is expected to miss the early rounds of the next campaign.
