Birmingham City and Wrexham are currently on course to win automatic promotion from League One, and both teams share a very similar trait.

Wrexham go into their meeting with Exeter City this weekend looking to maintain their place inside the top two.

Wycombe Wanderers still have a game in hand to play out and their better goal difference means they will overtake the Red Dragons if they win it.

Right now though, it is Phil Parkinson’s side who are in better form, with their recent upturn in results including a huge win over the Chairboys two weekends ago.

After seeing off Wycombe, Wrexham beat Stockport County 1-0 on Saturday thanks to Jay Rodriguez scoring his first goal.

After Rob McElhenney message, Phil Parkinson comments on Wrexham 1-0 wins

Taking to X/Twitter post-match, McElhenney discussed the Welsh outfit’s consistent 1-0 wins this season and how nervous they make him.

He wrote: “I guess there are worse records to break than the one for most 1-0 victories. But boy, is it terrible for the nervous system. 8 GAMES TO GO FOR HISTORY.”

Including Stockport, Wrexham have now picked up 10 1-0 victories across 2024/25 in the league.

Now, Parkinson has been asked about this and, as per Leader Live, was quick to point out that league leaders Birmingham City have also secured a number of victories by the same scoreline.

He said: “Everybody’s talked about the strength and depth and I think that’s why there’s been so many tight games.

“People talk about our one-nil victories, but I think Birmingham have had a lot of one-nil wins too.

“There’s been a lot of really tight games this season in this division, and you can understand why with the strength and depth of the quality.”

It’s clear the reason both Wrexham and Birmingham are in the positions they are is in part down to their ability to grind out wins by small margins, even when they are not at their best.

Phil Parkinson says teams have fallen off this season

Aside from their impressive tally of 1-0 victories, there may be another reason Wrexham are so high up the table this term.

In the same interview, Parkinson suggested a number of teams are underperforming in the third tier in 2024/25.

He said: “There’s a lot of teams in this division who will have fancied themselves to be where we are.

“Teams like Peterborough and Rotherham have probably underachieved a bit this season.

“They are traditionally always play-off teams and Barnsley are another team currently outside the top six who would normally be expected to be in there.”
