‘Unlikely’ – Plymouth Argyle relegation verdict delivered by EFL pundit

Plymouth Argyle are ‘unlikely’ to stay up after losing to Derby County, EFL pundit George Elek believes.

Plymouth Argyle were beaten 3-2 by the Rams over the weekend. PAFC remain bottom of the Championship table.

The Pilgrims are six points from safety behind Stoke City and Cardiff City. They are inside the drop zone along with Derby County and Luton Town.

Elek has said on the Not The Top 20 Podcast on YouTube: “It is too early, as Derby have shown, to rule out any of these teams. It does feel like Argyle’s surprising win away in midweek at Pompey has just about kept them in it. It is looking terminal for Argyle, you have to say. In part, it’s because there’s a six point gap to Cardiff and it also that Luton and Derby sit between them.”

He added: “It just feels relatively unlikely to me especially because their home form seems to have dipped which is where they have been most successful this season for the most part. Away wins, such as the one at Portsmouth, do help.”

Plymouth Argyle latest update

Plymouth Argyle fought back from 2-0 down against Derby County. Mustapha Bundu was on the scoresheet again, whilst Nat Phillips scored an own goal.

However, they ended up losing to the Rams following Marcus Harness’ late winner.

Miron Muslic was appointed as their manager earlier this winter after Wayne Rooney was given the sack.

Speaking after their defeat to Derby County, he told their website: “I am very emotional and, to be fair, very down. We gave away the game. We were 2-0 down because we cannot defend two throw-ins.

“We gave away so much against Sheffield, and we did it again today, but we managed to bounce back, to find a way back in the first half, and to start well in the second half to get back in the game, and get back to 2-2.”

Prior to his switch to Home Park, he managed Ried and Cercle Brugge.

Plymouth Argyle were promoted from League One back in 2023 under the guidance of Steven Schumacher.

They then lost the Liverpudlian, who is now at Bolton Wanderers, after Stoke City lured him away.

The Pilgrims managed to survive last term but face an uphill battle to do the same now in this campaign.

What now for Plymouth Argyle?

Plymouth Argyle have eight fixtures left to play to save themselves.

They are back in action after the international break with an away trip to Watford.
