Explained: Why Plymouth Argyle have not recalled on-loan Ben Waine

The Pilgrims have been left short of attacking options after recent injuries to Ryan Hardie and Muhamed Tijani.

Plymouth Argyle have been desperately short of attacking options with the recent injuries to Ryan Hardie and Muhamed Tijani, and on-loan Burnley striker Michael Obafemi largely out of favour under head coach Miron Muslic.

Hardie is now close to returning to action from a back problem, possibly as soon as the Championship match against Sheffield Wednesday at Home Park tomorrow, but Tijani faces an extended period out due to a hamstring issue.

That has led to some of the Green Army wondering why Argyle have not recalled New Zealand international forward Ben Waine from his season-long loan at League One outfit Mansfield Town.

Waine has struggled to get much game time at Mansfield but the 23-year-old would be another option for Muslic to use up front if he was available to play for the Pilgrims.

However, there is a reason why Argyle have not brought him back to Home Park. That is because it is only possible to recall a loan player during a transfer window, and then only if the agreement specifically allows it. In the case of Waine, Argyle could have chosen to do that in January but they did not.

All clubs have to submit their squad list to the EFL at the end of a transfer window and this cannot be amended outside of that other than for what are considered to be exceptional reasons, such as a long-term injury or no available goalkeeper.
