Virginia Tech legend Michael Vick to become the new head coach at Norfolk State
Michael Vick is now a coach. No, Vick isn’t an entry-level analyst in college football, a quarterback coach in the NFL, or even a high school coach. Vick is expected to become the new head football coach for the Norfolk State Spartans.
The Virginia Tech legend and 13-year NFL quarterback reportedly agreed to accept the head coaching position this week, according to David Teel and of The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press.
It’s been a wild week for Vick coaching rumors. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Monday that Sacramento State was interested in Vick for its head coaching vacancy and was prepared to surround Vick with an experienced staff. Additionally, Schefter said Sacramento State planned to build a new stadium and had $50 million in NIL to build a competitive roster.
Those NIL numbers sound ridiculous.
Regardless, once Vick’s name surfaced at Sacramento State, it didn’t take long before he reportedly agreed to return home to the 757 and become NSU’s new head coach.
Interestingly enough, Norfolk State has yet to confirm the news, although Vick himself has said it is done. So, until the school puts out a release, Vick’s hiring remains unofficial.
Arguably the greatest and most impactful player in Virginia Tech history, alongside Bruce Smith, Vick grew up in Newport News and played at Warwick High School before coming to Blacksburg. Vick spent three seasons at Virginia Tech, leading the Hokies to the national championship game. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft.
Vick has worked in the media with FOX Sports in recent years and has been around the Virginia Tech program much recently since Brent Pry took over as head coach in 2022.
Vick’s hiring at NSU comes when Pry is fighting for his job after a disappointing 6-6 season. Things could get interesting if Vick has immediate success and the Hokies struggle in 2025.
We’ll have more on Vick’s new job once it becomes official.
