“It is with profound heartbreak that we announce the sudden passing of Steve Mensch, beloved husband, father, and president and GM of Studio Operations at Tyler Perry Studios. Steve passed away unexpectedly while doing something he loved deeply—piloting the custom-built plane that reflected his passion for flying and innovation,” the family said in a statement.

His family said his love for flight was “matched only by his passion for storytelling and his commitment to uplifting those around him.”

“As a visionary leader at Tyler Perry Studios, he left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry and the countless lives he touched through his mentorship and kindness,” the family said. “Although we are devastated by this unimaginable loss, we take comfort in knowing that Steve was living his dream, pursuing what he loved with boundless enthusiasm and dedication. We are immensely grateful for the outpouring of support during this incredibly difficult time. Steve’s legacy of creativity, generosity, and love will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.”

The family is asking for privacy to grieve and honor Mensch’s life.

The crash happened in Homosassa, about 60 miles north of Tampa. Photos from the scene show the plane having come to rest upside down on a road. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
