The curbs sat at 4 inches tall. It caused cars to launch in the air at impact but was designed to keep cars from cutting the course.
Ahead of the race, NASCAR roved large turtle curbs. Drivers were complaining that they were too violent.
Without the large curbs, NASCAR needed rules to keep drivers from cutting the corner. They installed cameras to monitor the corners that were modified.
NASCAR stated, “You will be judged as missing or short-cutting any turn previously described when all four tires on the non-track side of the red and white rumble strips that define the apex of the turns.”
Bubba Wallace cut the course. He was issued a penalty and required to come to a full stop in the chicane on the next lap.
However, in the same clip, William Byron also cut the course. Byron was not issued a penalty.
