NASCAR has announced a series of aerodynamic modifications to the Next Gen car mere days before the crucial Round of 12 race at Talladega. These changes, intended to enhance safety by minimizing the risks of vehicles becoming airborne during high-speed incidents, have drawn ire from some drivers, particularly Denny Hamlin. Speaking on his ‘Actions Detrimental’ podcast, Hamlin sharply criticized the extended-height roof rail, arguing it impedes driver visibility. With just days to go before Talladega, NASCAR’s decision has prompted a debate on the balance between safety and driving performance.
NASCAR’s latest adjustments include an extended-height roof rail, an elongated rocker panel skirt, and additional fabric beneath the right-side roof flap. These changes are aiming to reduce the likelihood of a car becoming airborne in crashes. Hamlin did not hold back in expressing his dissatisfaction with these late-stage changes. He explained that the drivers were briefed on these modifications, which they collectively opposed. “We got briefed by NASCAR on changes that they’re proposing for Talladega. Which is running that roof rail over our front windshield. And obviously the drivers were not in favor of that
For one, it looks like ass. And second, it hurts visibility… The problem is, is that we take tear offs off of our front windshield. And superspeedways are one of the worst tracks for debris on the front windshield. So, we need to get those tear offs off. “But this block is probably 15% of the windshield, and especially the right front corner when we’re side drafting. We are constantly looking out at the right front corner of the windshield to gauge how close we are to each other and others. And there’s just not a really good solution.” Elton Sawyer, NASCAR’s senior vice president of competition, has addressed the changes, commenting:
It’s a complicated situation there when you’re running the speeds that we’re running. And you put multiple cars close together and how they affect each other. “Our guys in the back, I know they’ve been working since Saturday night to kind of recreate all that. And still some additional work on our side to be done.” Heading into the race weekend at Talladega, Hamlin is fifth in the Playoff standings with William Byron currently leading. Tyler Reddick, Daniel Suárez, Chase Briscoe, and Austin Cindric are all at risk of not getting through to the Round of 8.
