Manning delivered quite the performance, finishing with 223 yards passing, four touchdowns, and scoring on a 67-yard touchdown run. Manning passed former Texas quarterback Vince Young for the longest run by a player at the position since 2005. Manning and Ewers were the top prospects in their class, per the On3 Industry Rankings.

The Longhorns have a decision to make with UL Monroe on the schedule before facing the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Sept. 28. On a recent episode of “Always College Football,” Greg McElroy set the record straight on what Texas should do. McElroy loved what Manning did against UTSA but did not think the Texas quarterback was ready to start. McElroy mentioned what Ewers did for the program last season. Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning (16). Scott Wachter-Imagn Images Scott Wachter-Imagn Images “I love what I saw from Arch Manning,” McElroy said. “There are people right now that are saying Arch Manning should 100% be the starting quarterback over Quinn Ewers. The same Quinn Ewers that went to Michigan the week before and dominated. The same quarterback that engineered a playoff run last year. Now, because Arch took off and ran for a 65-yard touchdown, he’s the answer.”

While Manning looked great in relief of Ewers, McElroy still believed the program should go with the more experienced player. Ewers had 185 yards passing, two touchdowns, and one interception before exiting the game with an injury. “I looked at it, and I thought Arch was fantastic,” McElroy said. “Had a couple of touchdown passes. The numbers were outrageous. …He’s also filling in for a guy that was 14 of 16 for 185 yards and two touchdowns before he got hurt. …I love Arch Manning, and he’s going to be an amazing player, but his time will come. It’s Quinn Ewers’ team for now.”

With Week 4 approaching, Steve Sarkisian has a big decision to make. Texas kicks off against UL Monroe on Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on SEC Network+ and ESPN+.
