A series on A&E will feature an episode dedicated to a hazing at Penn State which left one student dead.
Episode three of “Houses Of Horror: Secrets of College Greek Life” will focus on the story of Tim Piazza, a 19-year-old freshman at Penn State who was pledging at the university’s chapter of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
“Freshman pledge Tim Piazza is forced to consume a lethal quantity of alcohol during a Beta hazing ritual called “The Gauntlet”,” reads a description of the episode. “Fraternity insider implors [sic] his brothers to get help but they push him aside, opting to protect the brotherhood.”
Video recordings of the event showed that Piazza consumed 18 alcoholic drinks over the course of 90 minutes during the hazing. Soon after fell down the stairs into the basement of the frat house.
He was found unconscious and placed on a couch, and then spent several hours in and out of consciousness. Those who were with him did not call for medical help until more than 11 hours after his injuries. He died two days later.
According to the Daily Mail, Piazza’s parents, James and Evelyn and Piazza, will be featured in the episode.
Criminal charges were brought against 23 members of the fraternity and the frat’s former president and vice president, all of whom plead guilty to charges of hazing and reckless endangerment.
The former house manager of the fraternity was also charged with hindering apprehension, evidence tampering and obstruction. He was acquitted of the latter two charges.
The Piazza family filed a civil lawsuit against several members of the fraternity in 2019, and the five-year delay of the civil case has recently been removed following the guilty plea in the remaining defendants’ criminal case.
