Swindon Town and Walsall Reunion Hits a Snag as Player Is Informed He Can Depart

Cheltenham Town appointed former Swindon Town and Walsall boss Michael Flynn to the role of manager following the departure of Darrell Clarke to Barnsley. However, the reunion with former player Liam Kinsella has not turned out how many would have expected.

Kinsella has been under the management of Michael Flynn at three different clubs, they first met at Walsall where the player had enjoyed the majority of his career.

When Swindon Town appointed the 43-year-old as their new boss last summer, the midfielder was one of several players who made the move to the County Ground in part of the club’s new look side. His spell with the Robins did not last long and after his former boss was sacked, he opted to take the step up to League One with Cheltenham Town.

Unfortunately, they were relegated from the third tier shortly after with Darrell Clarke jumping ship at the end of the season. The appointment of Flynn may have provided a false sense of security for Kinsella, having endured a tumultuous spell following his departure from the Saddlers.

What’s Been Said by Michael Flynn on Kinsella?

According to Gloucestershire Live, the player is one of three who have been told that they can look for another club:

There have been no falling outs, or anything,”

“Liam Kinsella, this is the third club I’ve had him and he’s a fantastic lad, good professional. Tom Bradbury has kept his head down and likewise Max Harris.

It’s just been an honest conversation that if something comes up for them, they will be allowed to leave the football club. That happens everywhere. I got told that loads of times as a player.”

“The people who are available have been told and it hasn’t changed from when I have come in. I have been open and honest, it’s just where we’re at, at the moment,”

What happened?

The player followed him to Swindon Town in what appeared to be the manager bringing in one of his trusted players to steady the ship and get across his instructions to the side. With the player already being at Cheltenham Town, many would have surmised that he would have taken the same approach. However, for whatever reason Flynn no longer feels like the player has a spot in his team which will likely have come as a blow to the midfielder, who only took the step up to League One with the club six months ago
