Rubén: “We’re showing the signs of where we want to be.”

Rubén Sellés praised his side’s robust and commanding performance on Saturday, where goals from Savage and Ehibhatiomhan secured the first home win of the season at RG2.

However, the Royals Boss was quick to temper expectations, emphasizing that there is still much work to be done to achieve their season’s ambitions. Sellés also expressed his appreciation for the fans’ continued support and urged them to bring the same energy to Tuesday night’s cup fixture against West Ham United U21s.

“It was a really good start to the season at home, with a victory and a lot of emotions heading into the game. The boys did their job brilliantly. We intended to dominate, scored that early goal, and that helped us control the majority of the first half. In the second half, we were clinical when we needed to be and were able to command the game. Now, for the boys, it’s about consistency.”

“Every game, that is the ideal position we want to be in—starting quickly—but that doesn’t always happen. On Saturday, everyone had a good feeling from the very beginning. We wanted to be aggressive, be on the front foot, and build from there. It was all about tempo, tempo, tempo—and the boys executed the game plan excellently.”

“We spoke about it in pre-season, the need to be robust, to have a clear identity in how we handle certain moments in the game, and to be confident in ourselves. So far, we are slowly meeting those demands, but with each game, the stress and pressure increase, so we have to make sure we stay on top of that. Soon, three points could mean everything or nothing, and that’s when you find out what you’re made of.”

“So, Saturday was a good day—second game of the season, showing all the right signs—but we have achieved absolutely nothing yet.”

“We know as the season goes on, we need everyone in the squad to be competitive and ready, including the players coming up from the U21s or U18s. They need to show they can step up to the level, to demonstrate they want to improve every single day, because we need them.”

“Everyone has a big part to play in this team; everyone has something to contribute. Nights like Tuesday will be an opportunity for one or two players to show if they can compete at the required level.”

“Being at home can provide some comfort and help the team perform, as these fans have been fantastic with us, supporting us through everything. I always remember the not-so-good moments. Of course, fans will celebrate victories and everything seems fine, but in those tough times, the support means the world to me and my players.”

“Tuesday night will be another one of those occasions where we need the fans’ support for the players, to maintain the momentum in the team, especially for those who will get some minutes on the pitch after working hard and earning their opportunity.”

“So again, I thank the supporters, and hopefully we can continue making these good times last
