Corey LaJoie’s scary NASCAR flip, upside-down slide ‘was a ride, buddy’

Corey LaJoie’s FireKeepers Casino 400 ride Monday at Michigan International Speedway turned into a wild slide — a lengthy upside-down trip up the racetrack.

The adventure that gave him an unusual perspective on the race began when his No. 7 car brushed against Noah Gragson’s No. 10 car on the 136th lap. It slid toward the infield, spun and flipped, setting off on a lengthy upside-down trip that, after another roll, ended with the car back on its wheels. LaJoie was uninjured and was checked out in the infield care center.

“It was a ride, buddy,” LaJoie told reporters via Autoweek. “There’s sparks and dirt and all sorts of stuff coming in. I just hate that our Garner Truck Camaro got a little dinged up. I think we had a top-12, top-10, car today, and I hate that we ended up on our roof.”

The USA/NBC Sports camera captured what LaJoie, who was in 32nd place when his world flipped, saw from inside the car on its roughly 1,000-foot slide.

I don’t know if it was the arms of an angel or what it was, but that thing was up quick,” he told Fox’s Bob Pockrass with a laugh as he left the infield care center. Admitting that he’s “not an engineer,” he pointed out that there was a 15-20 mile per hour headwind that could have helped flip the car into a position that no one wants to be in.

I don’t like to get upside down. I’ve done it twice this year and it’s no fun.”

Tyler Reddick won the 200-lap Brooklyn, Mich., race, which had concluded Monday after being suspended because of weather Sunday.
